There is a segment of thought that considers the soul, our conscious state of being, as having the capacity to exist outside our mortal shells. Such capacity is to be celebrated, but it has led some to contemplate notions of digital immortality. This line of thought is found in popular works of fiction, film, television and other forms of media. While I do personally believe in life after death, I would argue that a man-made substitution of such is not within the scope of our intended design and would lead, quite simply, to a vast, unexplorable nothingness-a nonexistence.
